Robert Kyr’s 21st-century cantata Songs of the Soul is written in response to (and in the manner of) the music of J.S. Bach. Duos for soprano and baritone soloists and strings alternate with fugal motets for chorus.

This seven-movement work was met with a warm response from audiences and considerable praise from critics when it premiered in Austin in January 2011. The Wall Street Journal called it “a powerful new achievement in American music that vividly traces a journey from despair to transcendence.”

Hear Conspirare’s Company of Voices and the Victoria Bach Festival String Ensemble perform Songs of the Soul and The Cloud of Unknowing before they travel to Corpus Christi to record the program for the Harmonia Mundi record label.
